Ahh… Terrence “Geezer” Butler… The pioneering heavy metal bassist of none other than Black Sabbath!
An idol to many, our beloved Geezer has finally made his signature Lakland PJ bass available for us to purchase. Even if you are not a heavy metal fanatic, this bass can be used in various genres. It’s an incredibly versatile piece of equipment!
This is a visual masterpiece. Since it is made overseas, this bass guitar is more than reasonably priced. On the other hand, since the manufacturing process is finished in the US, you can rest assured that the build quality is of the highest (non-boutique) order!

Our verdict on the Lakland Skyline 44-64 GZ PJ bass
This is a tremendous instrument. Spec-wise it really is equipped with some fine electronics and great hardware. It is very well-built and playable which adds another layer of attractiveness to this beauty.
The sounds you can dial in are very versatile. You can easily use it for any genre you want. The sustain levels are, dare we say, Spinal Tap worthy!
The look is stunning and the best part is that it can fit in with any music genre and its particular sense of aesthetics. The glossy and translucent purple-magenta color really does make this guitar stand out look-wise.

The body of this fine bass axe is made out of ash. Although this tonewood can make guitars somewhat weighty, this is not the case with the Skyline GZ PJ. The guitar is reasonably lightweight.
The tone of the ash body is exactly what you expect from it. Besides a healthy dose of lows and mids, this tonewood makes the instrument cut through any mix with its soaring highs.
The neck is made out of maple and it is finished off in matte. It makes for a really fast playing guitar. Better yet, the pearl and abalone fretboard inlays that complement the ebony fingerboard make for a stunning visual appeal.

Electronics
This baby boy is equipped with the Geezer Butler signature EMG pickups. One is a Geezer Butler signature P-style split-coil pickup. The other one is the single-coil J-style pickup that is located in the bridge position.
The pickups are incredibly versatile. You can dial in any type of tone that you wish, from silky pop sounds to some harder-edged metal sounds. One of the best things about these pickups is the fact that they are stunningly silent and hum-free.
Here you are getting three pots in total: two volume pots and one tone pot. You can pretty much do most of the mixing of your bass tone with the right positioning of your pots.

Hardware
The hardware itself is really suave and classy-looking. The black Hipshot tuners provide a great deal of tuning stability. Better yet, the same can be said about the dual-access bridge. Besides being stable intonation-wise, the dual access bridge makes for a very easy string change.
The aluminum pickguard is another sturdy piece of hardware that adds up to the general sense of premium looks.
Build quality
Although built outside of the US, the build of this instrument is very high. Better yet, the whole manufacturing process (although started overseas) is finished in the US.
It is very sturdy and durable, which can play a huge role for any touring and recording artist.
One of the nicest things about this instrument is that the frets were leveled out by PLEK technology. In other words, it has no rough edges, therefore the highest level of playing comfort is guaranteed!

Playability
One of the main feats of this bass in this aspect is the neck itself. It is really fast playing and comfortable. The body contours are exactly what you expect from a PJ model. It really adds to the ergonomic quality of the instrument.
All in all, this is a highly playable and comfortable instrument.
Who is the Lakland Skyline 44-64 Geezer Butler PJ best suited for?
You may jump to conclusion that this guitar is only reserved for the Geezer Butler and Black Sabbath fan boys, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
This guitar is so versatile that you can play any style of music with it. Another awesome consideration is that it also looks equally appropriate for any possible genre of music.
On the other hand, this is not your typical beginner-level bass guitar, both in terms of quality and pricing. However, it is a perfect tool for any professional or intermediate player.
- Incredibly versatile bass guitar.
- Stunning looks.
- Some guitars in this line have an inconsistent body color.
